Description

This course provides students with a brief introduction to the history of Asian countries – China, India, Korea, Japan – since the 16th century. Aiming at introducing the historical backgrounds of modern trajectories in Asia, this course briefly focuses on the political, religious, social, cultural, and economic developments that happened in this area. Topics covered in this course include the Manchu Conquest in China, the Opium War, the “Opening of Japan”, British Colonization in India, the rise of nationalism in China and India, and Asian countries’ fighting for independence.
